Meet Steinway

Steinway is a Standardbred who gave everything he had — and when he had nothing left to give, he was discarded into the kill pen.

His body tells the story. His back legs are marked with pinfire scars, a reminder of the miles, the pressure, and the life he endured. And yet… with time, patience, and grace, he is healing.

Steinway was once rescued and placed — but like we see far too often, things were not what they seemed. Neglect and improper care left him in devastating condition. His hooves were so poorly handled that this gentle soul was nearly crippled… and came dangerously close to losing his life.

Let this be said clearly: if you are not a farrier, do not trim your horse’s feet.

Thanks to the incredible efforts of Standardbred Retirement Foundation (SRF) and the dedication of Christine Banks, Steinway was given another chance. Step by step, day by day, his feet were brought back, his pain eased, and his spirit restored. Thank God for the strength and heart of this breed — many others would not have survived what he endured.

Now safe at Grace Beyond the Track, Steinway is finally living the life he deserves. He enjoys daily grain, alfalfa, green pastures, and, most of all, love. And despite everything he’s been through, he hasn’t lost his trust in people.

In fact, when the farrier truck pulled in… Steinway knew. He stood calm, ready, and willing — as if he understood he was finally in good hands. That’s who he is.

Steinway is already thriving in his new role. In the arena, he carries advanced riders with confidence, jumps with heart, and gently takes care of beginners and children alike. He wants to be with his people. He wants to work. He wants to give.

Now, he’s beginning his journey to become a Standardbred ambassador — helping in the hunter/jumper ring, working with veterans, supporting those grieving loss, and bringing hope to children facing illness, trauma, and hardship.

These horses can do it all. They don’t ask for much — just time, patience, and love. And in return, they give you everything.
